Rising of Ergonomics Cases in Malaysia
The number of work related musculoskeletal disorders in the country has been rising steadily and compensation for ergonomics related cases was found to be higher than other occupational diseases. Citing the Social Security Organisation’s (Socso) statistics, in 2013 there were 694 ergonomics related cases out of 2,630 cases of disease, which means for every four cases reported to Socso, one was related to musculoskeletal disorders.
What is work related musculoskeletal disorders? “Work related musculoskeletal disorders are collective and descriptive symptoms caused or aggravated by work and characterized by discomfort, impairment, disability or persistent pain in joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. Examples of musculoskeletal disorders are back pain, slipped disks, carpal tunnel syndrome, and stiff joints.”
To help industry tackle issues related to ergonomics and human factors, DOSH introduced the Guidelines on Ergonomics Risk Assessment at Workplace 2017. It provides a systematic plan and an objective approach in identifying, assessing and controlling ergonomics risk factors associated with the work tasks and activities in the workplace. These guidelines help employers, employees and safety and health practitioners to assess the level of ergonomics risk at their workplace in order to implement more effective control measures based on the identified risks.
Hence, employer should take a responsibility to increase the level of awareness of the employees by organizing a talk and seminar related to ergonomics and manual handling.
